Key ingredient

What are leading ingredients in cosmetics?

Leading ingredients (often referred to by experts as “key” or hero ingredients) are substances that form the heart of a product's story. It is these ingredients that most often give a name to an entire line of cosmetics, determine a unique scent, a velvety texture, or the inspiration behind a particular formula. A leading ingredient is a central theme that transforms daily skincare into a pleasant ritual.

Unlike active ingredients, whose role is strictly biological and laboratory-based, a leading ingredient plays an important function in communicating with the Customer. It helps to quickly understand what natural wealth, exotic oil, or traditional extract an entire product line was built around.

At Laboratorium FLOSLEK, we ensure that our leading ingredients are not just a marketing claim on the label. We select substances with excellent sensory qualities, intriguing origins, and safe actions, so that each cosmetic line has its unique character.

Leading ingredient vs. active ingredient – what's the difference?

Although these two terms are often used interchangeably in the world of cosmetics, it's worth knowing a simple rule that differentiates them:

  • An active ingredient is a biological fact: It has one specific task deep within the epidermis (e.g., retinol remodels the skin, and niacinamide regulates sebum). It often works in fractions of a percent and is hidden under a complex name at the end of the INCI list.
  • A leading ingredient is the product's character: It's the “star” of advertising and packaging. It may or may not have strong therapeutic effects. Sometimes its main task is to give the cream a beautiful scent (e.g., rose extract), a luxurious finish (e.g., pearl powder), or to protect the epidermal barrier.

When do they become one? Very often, a leading ingredient is also an active ingredient – this happens when, for example, aloe vera juice is the main theme of a line (leading ingredient) and simultaneously genuinely soothes irritations (active ingredient).
