- An active ingredient is a biological fact: It has one specific task deep within the epidermis (e.g., retinol remodels the skin, and niacinamide regulates sebum). It often works in fractions of a percent and is hidden under a complex name at the end of the INCI list.
- A leading ingredient is the product's character: It's the “star” of advertising and packaging. It may or may not have strong therapeutic effects. Sometimes its main task is to give the cream a beautiful scent (e.g., rose extract), a luxurious finish (e.g., pearl powder), or to protect the epidermal barrier.
- Botanical leading themes – iconic plants and herbs that define our series (e.g., the arnica, eyebright, or phytoretinol series).
- Exotic oils and extracts – luxurious ingredients from around the world, giving cosmetics unique nourishing and aromatic properties.
- Treasures of nature and sensory experiences – substances that transform cream application into a home spa, taking care of texture, color, and sensory impressions.

What is Allantoin?
Allantoin naturally occurs in many plant species, but most abundantly in the comfrey root. It is an ingredient recommended for sensitive and allergy-prone skin.
Benefits of Allantoin:
- Soothes: effectively reduces redness and burning sensations.
- Regenerates: supports the epidermal renewal process.
- Additionally, it softens and smooths the skin.
How does Allantoin differ from Panthenol?
Both ingredients soothe, but Allantoin acts more superficially, softening and smoothing the epidermis and stimulating cell division, while Panthenol penetrates deeper and binds water. They are often used together for synergy.

What is Aloe?
Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice is a natural gel rich in nutrients, including polysaccharides, phenolic compounds, amino acids, minerals, enzymes, glycoproteins, sterols, organic acids, and vitamins.
Action & Benefits:
- Aloe leaf juice provides a powerful dose of hydration and soothing.
- It has a calming effect, even after sunburn or insect bites.
- Accelerates epidermal regeneration.
- Ideal for all skin types, especially sensitive skin.
It contains salicylic acid, which has antibacterial properties, and polysaccharides that form a moisturizing film on the skin.
Can pure aloe vera juice dry out the skin?
Used alone, aloe vera can paradoxically tighten the skin with prolonged use because it lacks an occlusive (fatty) phase. Therefore, it is best to 'seal' it with a cream or oil to lock moisture into the epidermis.

What is beta-glucan?
Oat beta-glucan is a natural polysaccharide derived from oat grains. It is a valued cosmetic ingredient due to its moisturizing and soothing properties, and its ability to support epidermal barrier functions. Studies indicate that oat beta-glucan can support the regeneration processes of damaged epidermis, for example, by influencing proper keratinocyte differentiation and the reconstruction of the skin's protective barrier. In cosmetics, it can be particularly valuable in preparations designed for dry, sensitive, and irritated skin.
Does oat beta-glucan help moisturize and regenerate the skin?
Yes. Oat beta-glucan supports the maintenance of proper skin hydration levels and the functioning of its protective barrier. Studies also indicate that when applied topically, it can support the reconstruction of a damaged epidermal barrier and improve its functioning. This makes it a particularly interesting ingredient for cosmetics designed for dry, irritated, and regenerating skin.

What is Biotin?
Biotin, often called the beauty vitamin, is essential for the proper functioning of skin cells, hair, and nails, participating in keratin synthesis.
Action & Benefits:
- Known as vitamin H or B7.
- A key ingredient for healthy hair and nails.
- Strengthens keratin structure, preventing brittleness and hair loss.
- In skincare cosmetics, it regulates sebaceous glands and improves the condition of problematic skin.
In cosmetics, biotin acts as a regulator – it helps control excessive sebum production, making it an ally in the fight against oily hair and acne-prone skin. It also strengthens the nail plate, preventing splitting.
Can biotin be overdosed when used in cosmetics?
No, biotin is a water-soluble vitamin, and when applied topically in cosmetics, it is completely safe. The skin absorbs only as much of the ingredient as it needs for regenerative processes.
Key ingredient
What are leading ingredients in cosmetics?
Leading ingredients (often referred to by experts as “key” or hero ingredients) are substances that form the heart of a product's story. It is these ingredients that most often give a name to an entire line of cosmetics, determine a unique scent, a velvety texture, or the inspiration behind a particular formula. A leading ingredient is a central theme that transforms daily skincare into a pleasant ritual.
Unlike active ingredients, whose role is strictly biological and laboratory-based, a leading ingredient plays an important function in communicating with the Customer. It helps to quickly understand what natural wealth, exotic oil, or traditional extract an entire product line was built around.
At Laboratorium FLOSLEK, we ensure that our leading ingredients are not just a marketing claim on the label. We select substances with excellent sensory qualities, intriguing origins, and safe actions, so that each cosmetic line has its unique character.
Leading ingredient vs. active ingredient – what's the difference?
Although these two terms are often used interchangeably in the world of cosmetics, it's worth knowing a simple rule that differentiates them:
When do they become one? Very often, a leading ingredient is also an active ingredient – this happens when, for example, aloe vera juice is the main theme of a line (leading ingredient) and simultaneously genuinely soothes irritations (active ingredient).
